Tamar road bridge, Saltash, Cornwall

Next to the Royal Albert Bridge, stands the Tamar Road Bridge. It spans the River Tamar between Saltash (my home town), and Plymouth in Devon, carrying the A38, one of the 2 major trunk roads into (and out of!!) Cornwall. It has recently been expanded by a major feat of engineering, where cantilever decks (known as 'Nippon Clip-Ons') have been added to the outside of the suspension bridge main deck and pillars. The original concrete decks were then replaced with lightweight steel ones, to enable a higher weight limit for vehicles using the bridge. Click on the logo below to find out more.

The tunnel leading up to the Tamar Road Bridge on the Saltash side has recently been closed for major re-lining work, as the original lining was cracking. This has now been completed, and hopefully this will put an end to the substantial upheaval the people of Saltash and those using the tunnel and bridge have had to endure over the last few years. The deck on the southern (downstream) side of the bridge is used exclusively for pedestrians and cyclists (except in emergencies, when it can be changed and used for traffic), and makes a very pleasant walk.
