SRL595H - 1969 Bedford TJ/HCB Angus WrT/L (Water Tender/Ladder)

Built on a Bedford TJ chassis, with bodywork by HCB (Hampshire Car Bodies) of Southampton.

This fire appliance was purchased by Cornwall County Fire Brigade for Saltash fire station, and was commissioned in May 1969, being allocated fleet number 313. It ran alongside an Austin K4 Loadstar class 'A' WrT, NCV 227, and Austin Gipsy SWP L4P, 82 ERL. It served as the 'first away' water tender ladder appliance until May 1976, when a new Dodge K850 appliance, KCV113P, with bodywork by Carmichael of Worcester became the water tender ladder, and SRL595H became the 'second away' appliance as a water tender.

January 1986 saw a change in L4P at Saltash, with 52 VRL replacing 82 VRL. In May 1986, a new Dodge G13, C107GAF, with HCB bodywork was purchased, and SRL595H was decommissioned. It was bought from Cornwall County Fire Brigade in June 1986, and is kept in full fire-fighting condition. It carries 400 gallons of water, and has a major pump driven by a power take off with a capacity of 500 gallons per minute, with two additional first-aid hosereel jets. The engine is a 4916 cc (300 cu.in.), 6 cylinder Bedford petrol engine. The ladders carried on the top of the appliance are a 10.5m (35ft) 'AJAX' wooden bow-trussed two section extension ladder, an aluminium alloy roof ladder, and a 14ft wooden two section short extension ladder. When in service as a water tender ladder, it carried a 13.5m (45ft) three section aluminium alloy 'LACON' ladder, and hydraulic crash rescue equipment.

The Coventry Climax 'Godiva' 4 man light water pump, known as a featherweight pump, carried in the nearside front locker, will deliver 350 gallons per minute. This type of pump was originally designed for the 'Green Goddess' Bedford S type Emergency Pump fire appliances of the post war Auxiliary Fire Service in the 1950's. It has a 4 cylinder water cooled aluminium engine (which was also used in the Cooper Climax racing car), attached to an impellor type water pump.

Now owned by P.J. Vickers, Cressage, Shrewsbury, Shropshire.
