New to the post-war Civil Defence, run by the Home Office in either 1954 or October 1955, this Control Unit was built on the Ford Thames 504E 2 ton chassis. In 1968, when the Civil Defence was disbanded, it was transferred to the City of Exeter Fire Brigade, stationed at Exeter fire station, in its yellow livery. In 1973/4, it was transferred to the newly formed Devon Fire Brigade when the City of Exeter Fire Brigade and Plymouth City Fire Brigade were amalgamated with the Devon County Fire Service.
