GMW 526 - 1950 Commer/Whitson WrT (Water Tender)

One of only three Commer appliances still running with bodywork by James Whitson of West Drayton. Spent its working life in service with Wiltshire Fire Brigade until the early 1970's.

Stationed at Amesbury and Salisbury before being taken out of service to be used as a driver training vehicle. Sold at auction and after serving with Wiltshire United Dairies, ended up at a garage on Weston-Super-Mare sea front. It stayed in an underground garage which was flooded by the sea in a storm that hit Weston in the late 1970's. The brakes and engine became siezed.

It was then left until acquired by the Mike & Jan Widgery of Cullompton, Devon and towed back to Devon (behind a Landrover!!), when restoration started in 1981 to get the 4750 c.c. six cylinder, 6 m.p.g. petrol engine running again.

All equipment on this appliance was collected by the Mike & Jan in the years they owned it, from the wooden 35ft ladder to the smallest item on board.

N.B. Until the introduction of flashing amber indicators on Road Vehicles, Fire Appliances were fitted with amber warning lights. They were then replaced by blue revolving beacons.

Now owned by Nick Baker of Gillingham, Dorset
